Job Description for Legal Intern (Summer)

Job Title: Legal Intern (Summer)

Team: Legal

Reports to: Marcy Twardak (CFO) & Daniel Kirschner (Partner)

Date Created: April 16, 2024

Position Location: Chicago, in person

Created By: Marcy Twardak

Department: Legal

Summary of Responsibilities:

Our law clerk and internship programs have launched the careers of hundreds of Chicago's finest lawyers and judges who maintain a close-knit community of friendship, mentorship, and networking across multiple generations of Corboy & Demetrio alumni. We seek law students who are smart, savvy, and committed to work hard in a high performing and creative environment. Forget what you think you know about legal writing, civil procedure, and evidence.

You will learn and grow while working directly with top trial lawyers on complex and catastrophic personal injury cases which straddle virtually every aspect of legal practice, including international law, corporate law, environmental law, health care law, regulatory law, sports law, contract law, government law, insurance law, employment law, and education law to name a few. The benefit you take from this opportunity directly correlates to the commitment you make and effort you give.

As a Corboy & Demetrio legal intern, you will be tasked with a variety of assignments, both legal and developmental, geared directly toward the success of our cases and our firm. This internship is not a front-row seat to observe others. Rather, you will be an integral hands-on cog in the practice of law.

Possible Detailed Responsibilities:

The responsibilities given to our legal interns vary and can include drafting and reviewing legal pleadings and documents; performing legal research and preparing memoranda; conducting pre-suit factual investigation; organizing and maintaining case files across network databases; working closely with and providing as-needed support to the administrative team; and generally tackling firm-wide legal, administrative, and development tasks as they arise.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional research, writing, and analytical skills.

  • Strong work ethic with ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.

  • Proficiency with Word, Outlook, and Lexis (or Westlaw).

  • Ability to succeed in an ever-changing, fast-paced professional environment.

Education:

Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school and in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA, and have completed their 1L or 2L year (i.e., rising 2L and 3L candidates may apply).

Management/Supervisory Responsibilities:

The position of intern is a subordinate with no managerial/supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment:

The internship is in person at the law offices of Corboy & Demetrio, and conducted during regular business hours of Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The office work environment is professional in both dress and demeanor for all employees, including interns.

Equipment:

Employees will be instructed on and expected to proficiently use a computer, printer, and office phone system.

Lifting Requirements:

This is a sedentary position with occasional miscellaneous lifting of up to 10 pounds maximum.
